What are the Side Effects of BOTOX Cosmetic Injections?

Over the years Botox has been used a safe, clinical method to reduce the signs of aging. Approved by FDA and the IMA, Botox involves injecting a protein based toxin in the skin to relax the muscles and even out skin texture. Most popularly, Botox is used to eliminate wrinkles, fine lines, and harsh lines and crow’s feet from the face in the cosmetic world.

Botox was initially used to treat blepharospasms, a muscle problem. Soon, in 2002 it was medically approved to be used for cosmetic purposes. By the end of 2013, the FDA approved Botox as a minimally invasive and effective solution to fight signs of aging by minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The temporarily lasting effects of Botox smoothen out frown lines between the eyebrows and the forehead to make the face appear younger, plump and lifted.

However, Botox injections should not be confused with fillers. Derma fillers are specifically used to plump up the face while Botox is used mostly in the upper portion of the face.

Botox is a safe, minimally invasive and temporarily but highly effective solution. However, if you are prone to skin infections, allergic reactions, suffer from neuromuscular conditions, pregnant or breastfeeding, then Botox must be used only after consulting a professional esthetician and dermatologist. Botox injections for cosmetic enhancement are used in very small doses and cannot potentially threaten health. It doesn't infiltrate very far and deep into the tissues to cause any negative consequences.

How Botox works?

Botulinum toxin, the main component of Botox blocks the nerve impulses to ease out the muscles thereby reducing the frown lines and wrinkles. It restricts the contraction of muscles for a temporary period of time thus keeping the skin from wrinkling.

Is Botox painful?

Botox injections are as painful and harmless as any other injection. So they are minimally painful. The pain can be subsided by numbing the skin beforehand with a topical anesthetic cream.

Does Botox have side effects?

Not in all cases, but Botox can display certain side effects depending upon the individual as skin and skincare is subjective. Some individuals may witness rashes, itching, headache, neck or back pain, nausea and diarrhea in extreme conditions. Dry eyes, dry mouth, runny nose, cough, fever, dizziness, increased sweating in underarms, watery eyes and eyelid swelling have also been detected in patients who have opted for Botox injections. If such symptoms occur, consult your dermatologist for an effective solution.
